I like to expose all my students to clay. I start in Kindergarten and each year build upon what we did previously. In second grade we learn about mold projects. To create a drape mold we flatten out the clay creating a slab and gently drape it over another object.
The projects seen here have been draped over deli containers. You can use any size and drape your clay over almost anything.
Materials:
Clay
Kiln
Texture tools
Canvas mats
rolling pins

How to make your drape mold clay dish:
1. Start by rolling our clay out to a pancake like thickness using rolling pins- clay that is flattened is called a slab. We place the clay on canvas mats so that it doesn't stick to the tables. If you have a wedge board that would work also.
2. Next, to add texture we press found objects into our clay. We use such things as buttons, old jewelry, plastic rings, screws--anything that will leave a texture. You can texture both sides or just one.
3. To drape the clay over your container you will need a piece of paper towel. Place the paper towel between the clay and the container so it doesn't stick to the plastic. Gently lay it over the container and manipulate the shape if you like but not too much.
4. Allow to dry overnight, then gently remove from the container and place right side up.
5. Gently carve your name into the clay and allow to dry.
6. Fire in the kiln and then glaze and re-fire.
Thanks for sharing. I did this project with my Kindergartin class for Art Awareness. It was a big hit. I used stamps, some I made by gluing buttons and beads to wooden pegs. We also used lego blocks, bobbin reels, forks, beads with decortive patterns on the sides, and various other intersting things I found around the house. The kids had so much fun making these bowls and the parent really loved the results. Great alternative to your traditional pinch pot.
