Imitation Fossils

In Kindergarten we create imitation fossils as our first clay project.  We discuss what a fossil is and how it is formed.  (A fossil can be defined as the remains or impressions of animals or plant materials from many, many years ago.)  We examine real fossils that I have in the classroom.  We also talk about why the imitation fossils that we will make with clay are fake.

To make your clay fossil you will need the following:
clay (air dry or kiln fired)
kiln
canvas mats
rolling pins
plastic bugs or plants
paint
water dishes
paint brushes

Here is how we make ours:
1. Roll out your clay with a rolling pin on a canvas mat (so the clay doesn't stick to the table)
2. Press your bugs or leaves into the clay -both sides or one
3. Allow to dry and then kiln fire if necessary
4.Paint & admire!  (We use watercolors)
